Dear valued Parents of Jurong centre,

On 3 Feb 2012, We have just completed an educational talk at our centre to share with parents about the importance of reading to your child and how to choose the right resources for your child.

Many good tips were shared and there were many positive feedbacks after the talk from parents. One parent said that she always read to her child but she realized she read the wrong way. She read too fast. She learnt that it is important to read to her 3 year old child aloud, slowly, according to his speed. It is also important to read the same book over and over again as the child was forming mental pictures initially followed by comprehension and eventually to prints.

It was also shared that one of the common mistakes parents made was that when they bring their children to the library, they chose the books for their children instead of letting them choose freely.

Another parent realized the mistake she made was that she kept the books away from her toddler because he was tearing the books.

In summary, the whole idea is to evoke the child’s interest in books before he will even start reading. There are many other ways to let your child enjoy reading. We were glad that many parents came to thank us for organizing this beneficial talk and they would apply the tips shared during the talk.

You may refer to http://myyoungchild.org if you wish to find good stories for your children.

To benefit the parents who missed the talk, we will post the handouts given in the talk in this month’s blog at "parents handout". Bi-monthly, we will post a sample of classroom activity in Feb 2012.

We are also starting our communication booklets mid Feb and please look out for them in your child’s bag. We look forward to stronger parental partnership with you and we hope to inspire your child’s learning together.

Yours Sincerely,

Cecilia Wong (Mrs Loh)
